What an amazing person Carolyn was and what a remarkable life. We feel so lucky to have known her for even such a short time. We shall miss the catch ups we always used to have when Carolyn came and stayed with Shelagh & Wynne, the 'adventures' we had while she was looking after Bobby (the cat) and the fun with the garage alarm and any thing else that Carolyn needed help with.

Carolyn as well as David met and became friends with many people in Castelló d'Empúries. She didn't speak Catalan or Spanish (just a few words to get by) and they didn't speak English. However, they made each other understood. They all wish to be remembered by expressing their love for Carolyn: Juanita Noguer, Rosmy Vergés, Claudia Briones, Maite Mulet, Rosa Roqué, Carme Vilardell, Paquita Comas, Moisés Renart, Lluís Barceló, Anna Maria Constanseu and Hotel Canet.

Remembering a true friend that became like family to us. My parents and I met Carolyn and David when I was 16 and we spent wonderful moments with them in Castelló d'Empúries, Empuriabrava and Palau Saverdera. Not to mention that without them, I wouldn't have met other marvellous English friends. Carolyn and I would have long conversations on the phone, she always had very entertaining stories to tell, we had a good laugh. We will always remember her as a lively person that brought light wherever she went. Thank you for being part of our lives. Already missing you. xxx

I first met Carolyn and David when they were best friends with my parents, Frances and Peter Field in the 70's. Yhen as I grew up and got married, my husband and I became close with them, and went in a few bonkers holidays abroad with them to Majorca and Sorrento....the laughs and incidents are far too many to mention! Then when we had our first child Lucy (now nearly 39!), they embraced her and happily let us put her to bed in their bedroom at Charlecote while we had dinner parties, then we wobbled home at the end of the night! When Lucy was 21 months old, we went on a 4 week camping trip by car to Spaun and spent 3 weeks with C&D at a wonderful campsite called Cypsella on the Costa Brava which was an epic holiday. C&D never let Lucy forget about her toileting accident on David's towel! This tribute is light hearted because all we ever had was fun with the Styans, and that's how I choose to remember both Carolyn and David. 😍

I first met Carolyn in the early 1990s when we were both sunning ourselves by the pool at an hotel in Benalmádena, Spain. It was the European Council of International Schools’ Spring Conference and David was a guest speaker. Mike and I had been working in International Education since 1975 and loved it. In the course of our conversation, I apparently said to Carolyn, “Wouldn’t you fancy an adventure?” Shortly after that, David was appointed Head of St Julian’s in Portugal and the rest, as they say, is history! I am so pleased that my comment led to a part of their life that gave them so much pleasure, both at St Julian’s and later travelling the world when David worked for the Accreditation Section of ECIS. Carolyn was a wonderful friend and being with her was always uplifting. She was such a cheerful, positive person with a real sparkle about her, a wonderful laugh and a prodigious memory for details - she remembered all sorts of things that I had told her. I’ll miss our regular FaceTime chats but I know how much she has struggled since David died. Together may you both rest in peace.

I can’t remember a time in my childhood when David and Carolyn weren’t a part of it. As children, Rachel and I would so look forward to seeing them when our parents had made plans with them. Carolyn was full of fun and so generous with her love and always so supportive of our endeavours over the years. She had such a sparkle about her and her laughter was infectious. It was so easy to listen to her wonderful stories about their life together. As an adult I always looked forward to her yearly updates on their exciting years together once they’d moved abroad and travelled extensively. They both had such a huge impact on our lives and were there for us when we lost our parents. Carolyn, my life has been so much richer with you and your dear husband David in it.

Tribute from Marian Potter She has always been a very special friend to me as we have known each other since 1971 when we were both new teachers at Woodville Secondary. Those three years that we worked and played together were very special. We had so much fun, partying, going to the pub, cooking and generally living in each other’s houses and classrooms. The photo of us dressed up is one night at a rather non sober party at my house. I went and spoilt all the fun by having babies and then departing for a new life in Australia but we always kept in touch. All of my memories of Carolyn are very precious. She has been a very important part of my life and an exceptional friend. She has done so much for me that I have not mentioned because it would go on forever. Even though I haven’t seen her for many years I feel the loss greatly. Rest in Peace Carolyn with David

What can I say about Carolyn that hasn't already been said by so many others? It has been a huge privilege to have known such a special person who I consider to be one of my closest friends. We enjoyed many memorable times together..with Shelagh too...on our various trips to Spain in recent years..memories that will stay forever. I miss her.

Remembering Carolyn always brings to mind her broad smile and effervescent spirit. Jan and I remember many active holidays spent in Spain and Portugal with her and David. Of special memory was the generous offer to host our honeymoon in Lisbon and, on a personal level, the amazing support she gave when I faced a difficult period of my life. Carolyn is certainly a person one can never forget for all the right reasons. If you want the epitome of the view that life is for living just think of Carolyn.

What can I say about my amazing sister. She was the life and soul of the party. Her presence would light up the room. Without her influence I would never have gone into teaching, gone on safaris, cruised, gone bird watching and enjoyed life in Spain, Portugal plus other parts of the world. Meeting many of her friends has also been fantastic and many have known Carolyn for a very long time showing what a good friend she could be to them all. I am not sure what life will be like with out her but if she is with David then I know she will be happy.

When I remember Carolyn, certain words flood my mind - joy, fun, energy, zest for life, caring, selfless, huge personality which lit the room, loyal wife, dear friend. There are many more to add which will show, in some small way, what a dear, dear friend she was. We were so lucky to meet by coincidence and chance to enjoy and share many years of summer holidays in Spain and France. I’m missing you. Rest in Peace, Carolyn.

Carolyn's thoughtful care, kindness, warmth & humour helped us support our daughter, Jane, through her terminal leukaemia, both in and out of school, from 1978 to her death in 1983. Carolyn and I became firm friends and confidantes though I insisted on confidentiality re Jane's illness - which I know Carolyn found difficult, but she complied! Later, Carolyn and David continued helping us raise funds and organised, with Jane's friends, our gatecrash of Ian Botham's cross-Britain Walk in 1985 (see photo). She was a wonderful friend.

I’m so thankful that my professional life brought me the gift of friendship with both Carolyn and David. Life with Carolyn was full of adventures. Thanks to her, I have ended up, against my will, in a helicopter from Nice to Monaco, fallen off their boat in Empuriabrava, been stopped by the police in New England for going the wrong way down a one-way street, and unintentionally serenaded an entire conference by singing New York New York together in the bar of the conference hotel in Madeira. For all of these experiences, and joy that Carolyn brought to my life, I am so very grateful.
